THE POSITIVE BENEFITS ON HANDWRITING

A handwriting competition was held on Friday 23rd April, 2021. Pupils of Kg 3N and Kg 3S partook enthusiastically. With sharpened nibs and exuberant smiles, they perfected the words as neatly as they could. They had to copy text from short story books and a set time was given to complete the work.

Hand-writing is encouraged as early as preschoolers as it strengthens a child’s pincer grasp and develops a child’s fine motor skills. These skills are necessary in other daily living aspects such as eating, picking up objects and getting dressed.

Writing helps a child to remember and comprehend information leading to better academic performance. When we write something down, it tends to resonate better in our brains.

Handwriting provides a sensory experience. Each letter, number or symbol, is formed by a distinct movement of the fingers and hand creating a unique sensory experience. It also provides stimulation across different senses. Visual and tactile (touch) senses are both used while writing by hand.

Handwriting helps cognitive development. It engages your child’s memory, motor skills, visual, perceptive parts of his/her brain, helping it get a good workout and remain sharp as he/she ages.

Carol Christensen is a Cognitive Psychologist, and she has studied the impact of handwriting for years. She says that fluency in handwriting is strongly related to the quality and quantity of students’ complete written text as late as grade 7.

Good handwriting is a predictor of success in other subjects, because good handwriting has a positive impact on grades.
Working towards improving handwriting is thoroughly encouraged in our school for we believe, practice makes perfect.

Three winners were selected. The teachers were delightfully surprised by Abrar’s handwriting. A unique style of calligraphy was noted. The first best was by Taher Nurbhai, second best by Francis Fredrick and third winner was Abrar Sultan.

Brief morning sessions of hand-writing will be continued as we prepare for round two of another impressive handwriting competition.
